NUMBER TWO: A BITTER PILL
Successful aging is something I think and feel very passionately about in my professional life. As a advance practice nurse (Rx drugs-or perform a drugectomy, order diagnostic test, put in stitches and much much more..) I care for a largely ignored, misunderstood, and neglected segment of our society, for which we may all join someday. I work in a small northern urban city providing home visiting for frail elderly. Late life is not often an easy time, I believe it could be easier if we understood it differently. I have lots to say about this issue fitness and frailty (balance)…pick my brain anytime.
A Bitter Pill: How the medical system is failing the elderly by John Sloan MD. Dr. Sloan’s greatest strength is his ability to question medical orthodoxy, combined with the courage to do so. Rx drugs make up much of what physicians offer people by way of treatment and prevention- a sorry fact that reflects our narrowness of perspective.
Also see this great video, where I obtain some of my training in geriatric medicine/house calls.
